Blue and White + My Favorite Restaurants in Charleston

Happy Monday, everyone!!! Today I decided to do something a little different than I normally do and thought it would be fun to share my favorite restaurants in Charleston. If there is one thing I know a lot about other than shopping, it is food. The places I chose are go-to’s of mine and restaurants that I always recommend to tourists when they ask for suggestions. Leave a comment and let me know what you think about these kinds of posts from me! Also, have you eaten at any of these restaurants? If you have, which one is your favorite?

My favorite places to eat in Charleston

Halls Chophouse

Halls is 100% my favorite restaurant in Charleston. It is definitely more of a special occasion restaurant (unless you are rollin’ in the dough) and is pretty pricey, but it is absolutely worth it. First of all, they treat you like a king. The service is phenomenal, and out of the four times I’ve eaten there, there has never been time when one of the Hall brothers hasn’t come up to our table to thank us for dining with them. Most importantly, the food is just downright spectacular. Their steak is always cooked perfectly, and they have so many different cuts to choose from. The sides are family style, so you almost always get to take home some leftovers with you.

What should you order?

filet mignon (make sure you get the black truffle butter as an accompaniment!!! You will regret it if you don’t), pepper jack creamed corn skillet, lobster mac and cheese

Boxcar Betty’s

This is one of my boyfriend’s favorite restaurants to eat at when he comes to visit me. It is a drive if you are visiting and staying downtown or at the beach since it’s in West Ashley, but it is definitely worth the drive. It’s in this tiny little shack-like building on the side of a busy road, but the inside is really cute and cozy, and the chicken sandwiches are so awesome. If you are staying in Charleston for awhile and have time to kill during one of the days of your visit, it would be a great place to eat a casual lunch after a long morning at the beach.

What should you order?

the boxcar chicken sandwich, the chicken “not so waffle” sandwich, fried pickles with ranch, fried green tomatoes with ranch

O-ku has the best sushi in Charleston, in my opinion. It is a very “hip” and “happening” restaurant with a cool vibe (do you think they would kick me out if they heard me say “happening” in there?). They also always play good music too. But the food is super good, and it is another go-to for me when it comes to nicer restaurants in Charleston. P.S., if you live in Charlotte, the O-ku in Charlotte is not nearly as good as the one in Charleston.

What should you order?

rock shrimp salad, the potato roll (my favorite sushi roll of all time), lobster temaki, yakiniku fried rice

Tattooed Moose

This is another of mine and my boyfriend’s favorites! It is a dive bar that serves the absolute best greasy bar food. Everything I’ve had there has been outstanding. And keep in mind, when I say “greasy bar food,” I don’t mean in the gross greasy way, I mean in the, “Wow, I know this isn’t good for me, but it makes a great cheat meal” way. I highly suggest checking it out one day if you’re in the mood for a beer and some comfort food.

What should you order?

the duck club (definitely share with another person, unless you’re a total savage and can eat it by yourself. In that case, I admire you), duck fat fries, the thanksgiving sammy (I was going to recommend the meat and cheese platter, but I just looked at the menu and it looks like they got rid of it! I’m so sad!)

Taco Boy

Everyone loves Taco Boy, and it’s one of my favorite places to get together with friends to enjoy a casual meal. They have great margaritas and I every time I go I really want to buy one of the hilarious t-shirts they sell! Overall, it’s just a fun atmosphere, and a great place to go after a day in the sun too!

What should you order?

chips and queso (you shouldn’t even need me to tell you this), nachos with cowboy beans, tempura shrimp taco, carne asada taco, pineapple-infused frozen margarita

Sugar Bakeshop

I really wanted to narrow this list to just five restaurants, but I just couldn’t not put this little bakeshop on the list! I loveeee this place, and when I leave Charleston after college, this will be one of the places I miss the most. First of all, it is so quaint and adorable. It’s downtown, but off the beaten path and quite a walk from all of the shopping and the CofC campus, where people are usually hanging around. But it is worth the trek or drive for sure. Their caramel cupcake is my favorite cake in the entire world. I want it to be my wedding cake. I’m serious. I don’t even know if they do wedding cakes, but I’m already planning on negotiating with them when the time comes.

What should you order?

the caramel cupcake, the caramel cupcake, and oh yeah, the caramel cupcake
